WiSE Leadership

Shobha Bhatia, Director

Dr. Shobha BhatiaDr. Bhatia joined the faculty at Syracuse University in 1980. She is a Laura J. and L. Douglas Meredith Professor for Teaching Excellence and is the 2015 recipient of a University Change Agent award from WEPAN (Women in Engineering ProActive Network). In 2009 Dr. Bhatia received a Syracuse University Chancellor’s Citation for Faculty Excellence and Scholarly Distinction. She has held many leadership positions including Chair of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. She received her Ph.D. from the University of British Columbia. She teaches courses in many areas, including geosynthetic design, earth embankment and dam design, earthquake engineering, and soil properties. Currently, her research interests include geosynthetic applications in civil engineering,

image processing, microstructure analysis of geotextiles and soils, and soil dynamics.

Karin Ruhlandt, Co-Director

Dean Karin RuhlandtDr. Ruhlandt, Distinguished Professor and Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, joined the faculty at Syracuse University in 1993. She was appointed Distinguished Professor, one of the University’s highest honors for faculty whose exemplary leadership in teaching and research has advanced the University’s scholarly mission. She received her Ph.D. degree from Philipps-Universität-Marburg, Germany in 1991. Her research group focuses on the chemistry of heavy alkali and alkaline earth metals. Particular research interests lie in two distinct areas: the preparation of novel organometallic species with applications in polymerization and synthetic chemistry, and the development of novel source materials for MOCVD applications.
